It was some twenty years ago that I began seriously to study Christian Science. I was understanding more and more what I really am as the child of God. I was able to overcome fear by perceiving that my spiritual identity, in the image and likeness of God, reflects purity and tranquillity. One of the citations from the Bible that always inspires me is "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee" (Isa. 26:3). Trust in God strengthens us to face the situations that we come across during the course of the day.

One day I had an appointment in Santo Andre, forty kilometers from the center of São Paulo. That was in the summer, when there are great downpours and storms. Suddenly the weather began to change; a great thunderstorm deluged the city. At that time of the year floods are frequent, and they bring great agony and problems for the population.

It had already been raining for about fifty minutes when I finished my business. From the building where I was, I saw through the window a very disagreeable panorama. A nearby river had overflowed its banks, and the streets of the city were submerged in muddy water. There were cars floating in the street, and water was entering the ground floors. At first I didn't get upset. I remembered some comforting citations from the Bible Lesson (found in the Christian Science Quarterly) that I had read before leaving the house.
