Some years ago, I was invited to speak to a group on a Bible subject. I had a whole year to prepare for the talk and looked forward to it with great joy.
The meeting was to be held in Newark, New Jersey. My wife accompanied me, as she was to attend a meeting in New York City, just across the Hudson River, on the same day. We especially looked forward to traveling back to Newark together, because just twenty years earlier we had been married in that city.
We flew east together and then rented a car and drove around the city. We retired early that evening, looking forward to a very eventful day for both of us. Early the next morning as the alarm wakened us, I remember sitting up in bed and declaring, "This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it" (Ps. 118:24). But then, as if to reverse my joy, a dark cloud of anxiety came over me. I fell back on the bed, shaking uncontrollably and feeling very ill. I was overwhelmed at the prospect of giving a talk before a large audience.
