For over ten years I suffered from an annoying disease associated...
For over ten years I suffered from an annoying disease associated with my monthly period. During this time I visited a number of doctors and tried many different medications, to no avail. The final medical opinion was that I would just have to learn to live with this and use medication when the symptoms were serve. I also suffered from anxiety attacks and severe depression and often wondered why life was so difficult.
In the midst of my physical and mental problems, I blew the dust off my copies of the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy and began to read them again. I had attended a Christian Science Sunday School as a child, but had fallen away from the church in my teens. My goal in reading these books was simply to find some peace.
Throughout the day I'd often find myself thinking very deeply about what I had read and what it meant. The message I gleaned from both books was that God loved me and that God was always taking good care of me. After reading for a short time (about six weeks), I saw very clearly that this disease I had suffered with was nothing but a false belief, a medical theory with no spiritual reality to support it. And I saw that matter was lifeless, substanceless. "The scientific statement of being" says clearly, "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter" (Science and Health, p. 468). This insight ended my desire to use medication and did away with my concern over the physical symptoms. It was so wonderful to glimpse the unreality of this disease! I did not think about the problem again until I realized several weeks later that I was completely healed. With great joy and gratitude I threw out a drawerful of medications.
