One morning I woke to find I was unable to hear out of my right ear. The ear felt very uncomfortable, and fearful thoughts flooded my consciousness. I was afraid I was going to lose my hearing altogether and felt too new in Christian Science to heal the condition. How can Christian Science and prayer alone possibly eliminate a physical blockage in the ear? I wondered. Before I had begun relying on this Science, these blockages had been removed by trips to our family doctor, who would flush out the blockage. But the problem would always recur.

I realized I had come to a mental crossroads. I could either keep seeking quick, though impermanent, relief through material medicine, or I could use this experience as an opportunity to rely solely on God, whom I was just beginning to learn more about and love more dearly. Choosing the latter alternative, I decided to call a Christian Science practitioner for treatment through prayer.

The practitioner suggested that I strive to listen more diligently for God's voice, to hear what He was telling me about my truly spiritual selfhood as His beloved and perfect child. It was explained to me that hearing, in its true, spiritual significance, is an indestructible faculty and function of God, good, the all-knowing and all-understanding Mind. Because I was His exact reflection, I must necessarily express Him unerringly.
