In college, I was required to take a course in biology to complete my degree. As a new student in Christian Science, I was concerned that this course might delve deeply into the subject of matter as the substance of being, and tend to reinforce my belief in it.
I had an experience one evening that gave me the opportunity to figure out what to do. I was walking through the neighborhood, reviewing what I had just studied for an examination I was to take the next day. The exam was on a detailed sequence of events that occur when various blood cells work together to heal a wound.
I came upon a large dog who looked friendly. But as I started to pet him he promptly bit my hand. Unafraid, I wrapped my hand in my T-shirt. I continued my walk since it was a very pleasant evening, and I didn't feel like going home yet. Previous experience with a dogbite on my leg that became painful and infected could have made me fearful of what might happen if the hand became infected, but I didn't entertain the thought.
Within a few days, my hand showed no sign of any injury.
I was certain that Christian Science was going to heal this completely and that no one would ever be able to look at my hand and tell I had been bitten by a dog.
When I got home, I studied the Bible and Science and Health. One passage from the latter gave me complete confidence that my biology studies wouldn't interfere with my healing. It states, "Every law of matter or the body, supposed to govern man, is rendered null and void by the law of Life, God" (pp. 380–381).
Within a few days, my hand showed no sign of any injury. The biology class went very smoothly for the rest of the semester.
