When my sister and I were in high school, we simultaneously developed very high fevers one late spring. This was diagnosed as scarlet fever, and county health officials quarantined the house. Mother and Daddy called a Christian Science practitioner to treat us.

I remember what I suppose would have been the "crisis" night, when one parent held each of us while the practitioner prayed, affirming aloud that in spite of the material picture, God's child is spiritual, whole, perfect; and that God's love for His own includes nothing but good. We were out of school just a week, during which time we were up and about the house, kept up with our schoolwork, and returned to school in time for final examinations. Other than that one night, neither of us ever felt sick.

Science and Health explains a good deal about inflammation, fever, and fear, pointing out that fear is "heat; inflammation; anxiety ..." (p. 586). The practitioner helped to destroy our parents' fear with the truth of the situation. The exact inspiration she shared with Mother and Daddy on that dramatic night, I don't know. But whatever it was, it eliminated their fear—and my sister's and mine—for we were healed.
