For five generations our family has known and practiced Christian Science and experienced many healings through the application of its teachings, which are based on the Bible. One healing has become a milestone for me because it has brought—and continues to bring—so much spiritual insight into my experience.

During a difficult time (we had lost our home through the war and did not know the whereabouts of my father), I fell ill with polio. Because of the regulations regarding infectious diseases, I was admitted to the isolation ward of a hospital. The doctors told my mother there was little hope for me, and they couldn't do anything more for me. If I were to survive, major handicaps were to be expected.

My mother heard this prediction, but—as she told me later—did not accept it. She had, after all, learned through her study of divine Science to turn to God with all her concerns and questions. And so she began her prayer-filled treatment for me, despite the fact that when we had to flee our home she had lost all her Christian Science literature. She relied on what she had learned by heart and on her unconditional trust in divine Love and its laws.
