I want to use this opportunity to detail an event of my business...
I want to use this opportunity to detail an event of my business career that required much prayer in the overcoming of fear and intimidation. At the time, I was an economist for a company that manufactured passenger aircraft for domestic and international airlines. My responsibility was centered on airlines in the United States. But one day my manager asked me if I could substitute for another man and be prepared to depart in one week for a sales trip to an airline in Africa. When I told him that I had never traveled overseas for the company, he was surprised and expressed concern about my ability to be ready in time. I had to get a passport, have a physical examination from company physicians (this was a legal requirement), and study the airline's economics and routes—a very time-consuming task.
Right away I turned to God in prayer. I remembered this statement from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy: "Whatever is governed by God, is never for an instant deprived of the light and might of intelligence and Life" (p. 215), and also a statement from Second Timothy: "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind" (1:7). I knew that if it was the right thing to do, the trip would be accomplished by expressing the perfect Mind. I told my manager that I would like to do this, and assured him that if I started immediately, all the tasks would be accomplished. He was especially concerned about the physical exam, because there was one inoculation that was so strong that the expected reaction would cause me to be away from the office for one whole day. I was sure that prayer would protect me from any negative consequences of this requirement.
I immediately drove to the city to apply for my passport. The officials assured me they would expedite my request. The next day, after a period of consecrated prayer, I took the physical exam, including the inoculation, with no ill effects. I was able to get right to work studying the necessary economic data of the airline.
