One Saturday our family met with friends we hadn't seen for years. It was a beautiful sunny day, and all of our children were enjoying a game of touch football in the park, when my teenage son came over and lay on the blanket next to me.

He had been bothered by open sores in his mouth for a couple of weeks. But suddenly this afternoon, they were quite a bit larger and he was in a lot of pain. We left the group so that we could talk alone for a while, but he didn't feel receptive to the thoughts I was trying to share. He wasn't interested in praying.

A little while later, I was talking to the other mother. She is also a Christian Scientist, and we often share ideas about raising our children. I said to her: "It's funny, I want my kids to think for themselves and not go along with peer pressure. But then when my kid does have a mind of his own, I don't know what to do. He doesn't want me to pray for him." My friend's response was so quick and simple. She said: "He can't have a mind of his own. God is his Mind. There is only one Mind, and that is God." I thanked her and readily agreed.
