I have found in my work as an educator that the Bible and Science and Health jointly make up the perfect "teachers' manual." Precepts from these books have sustained me not only in years of teaching but also in recent experiences "on the other side of the desk" as a graduate student in the field of education.

As a part of my graduate study in educational philosophy, I wrote a paper that I also presented at a national conference for educators. Afterward a conference participant who had requested a copy sent me a critique of my paper.

Shortly before receiving this critique in the mail, I began experiencing severe pain in one leg that made walking difficult and climbing stairs even more difficult. I asked for metaphysical treatment through prayer from a Christian Science practitioner, who urged me to claim spiritual understanding as my birthright as a child of God. Something else she said reminded me that normal use of the legs in standing upright, walking, and climbing can be viewed metaphorically as symbolizing stages of spiritual understanding and growth. A loved hymn, for example, depicts spiritual progress as "the mounting footsteps of the upward way" (Hymnal, No. 412).
