Reestablishing values
In a world that seems to find it increasingly hard to distinguish between right and wrong, it's reassuring to note that William J. Bennett's Book of Virtues has been prominent on bestseller lists ever since its publication by Simon & Schuster in 1993. Recently, it was joined in American bookstores by another Bennett anthology, The Moral Compass: Stories for a Life's Journey.
Mr. Bennett, a former United States Secretary of Education, describes the Book of Virtues as a "how to" book for moral literacy—a book intended "to aid in the time-honored task of the moral education of the young." He also says in his introduction that he hopes the book will encourage readers to dwell on the virtues highlighted by the Apostle Paul in his Epistle to the Philippians (see 4:8).
Mr. Bennett has participated in several leadership seminars on "The New Values Revolution." One of his addresses was published last November in the "Speech Digest" of Hillsdale College, Michigan. Here are some excerpts:
