I was not raised as a Christian Scientist, but I did learn of it at a fairly young age. A friend talked to me about it and told me she thought it was a wonderful way to live one's life. I always wanted to know more about God, so I began my study of Science and Health. I loved what I was learning, and I never really left it. But I did need to understand it better in order to prove its practicality.
About five years ago, I got the opportunity to prove what I had learned. A lump appeared in my armpit and I became extremely fearful. I telephoned a Christian Science practitioner for help, and she lovingly agreed to pray for me. She asked me to study Mrs. Eddy's explanation of man in the chapter "Recapitulation" in Science and Health. This explanation begins by stating: "Man is not matter; he is not made up of brain, blood, bones, and other material elements. The Scriptures inform us that man is made in the image and likeness of God" (p. 475). I poured my heart and soul into studying the Holy Bible and the writings of Mrs. Eddy. I also listened to hymns from the Christian Science Hymnal and articles from the Christian Science periodicals on tape. I did not give up, and I knew that I never would because I felt that God loved me and would guide me. The twenty-third Psalm was a great comfort and promise to me of God's love for all His children.
This prayer continued steadily for a week. The thought came to me that the only growth that could go on was spiritual growth. I thought about how I could grow spiritually, and the "still small voice" (I kings 19:12) spoke to my thought. The thought came, "Why don't you join church?" I agreed to do just that, and the very next day after that decision the growth disappeared and has remained gone.
