In Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy declares, "By lifting thought above error, or disease, and contending persistently for truth, you destroy error" (p. 400). A recent healing has become a major milestone in proving the practical results of persisting actively with spiritually based thinking to "destroy error."

I woke one morning with a severe pain in my head. When I tried to get up, I became dizzy and fell back into bed unconscious. Upon regaining consciousness, however, I was so grateful for the helpful thoughts that flowed immediately into my consciousness. Some of these thoughts were: I had an opportunity here to see some new aspect of the truth about God and my relation to Him; I could be "absent from the body" without ignoring the problem when prayer kept me "present with the Lord" (II Cor. 5:8); there was nothing, no power, that could keep me from seeing my true nature and identity as the beloved child of God; I would continue praying and affirming the truth, until thought yielded and my body corresponded with the health and harmony that are normal to God's man.

I also remembered the Bible story of Jacob wrestling alone, but persisting until he prevailed and was blessed by God (see Gen. 32:24–30). I felt a prayer-supported commitment to persist as Jacob did, instead of being tempted to seek any physical treatment for these symptoms. This was to be a time of regeneration, not simply an effort to change the body.
