True self-preservation

At the present time in history there is a migrating of many peoples worldwide who are seeking self-preservation and a new way of life. Like the good Samaritan in Bible times, we have the privilege of binding up the wounds of beaten lives and helping those in need see there is a future worth reaching for.

I speak from experience. As a result of years of war and its accompanying upheavals, I found myself as a teenager transported to a strange country, without means and with the urgent need of finding work. In order to survive, I was willing to accept any legitimate work, no matter how humble, until I became more familiar with my new surroundings. At that time I had only a hazy idea of God, so I thought I had to rely wholly on my own resources.

During this odyssey in a new land with entirely different customs, I learned about Christian Science. Then one Sunday, some new friends (Christian Scientists) invited me to go to church with them. Since I liked these people, and it was Easter, I accepted. The service deeply impressed me. Afterward my friends talked to me about Christian Science and its textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. (I already had a copy of this book, as well as the Bible, and had begun reading them.) My friends also referred me to a Christian Science Reading Room where I could buy a copy of the Christian Science Quarterly, a booklet containing the weekly Lesson-Sermons made up of selections from the Bible and Science and Health, which are read aloud in church services each Sunday. I was eager to begin studying the Lessons. Through my study I found that there really was a God with whom I could communicate. Fear began to subside and I no longer felt deserted and alone. I began to realize that my true being is spiritual, God's very image, and that God is Love as well as the real Life of man.
