Something better to celebrate!

Several years ago, a friend began sending me birthday cards. We had never exchanged cards before. The next year, I thought it kind to send her a card, and on the inside I wrote a long appreciative message. She went out of her way to tell me how much it meant to her.

When a birthday card from my friend arrived for me, I found that there was no message in it. She had not even signed the card—something I am sure she had meant to do. Instead of feeling elated, I felt hurt and even wondered if she really was a friend after all.

Immediately, I recognized that the real mistake was not my friend's apparent neglect. The mistake was thinking there could be something to celebrate that would imply man is a mortal with a beginning and an ending. If I hadn't been more alert to the real culprit, I might have lost a friend.
