Remaining watchful at Christmas, and the healing it brings
The Christmas season is here once again. For many, there are gifts to buy, parties to attend, goodies to bake, and messages to be sent across the miles to loved ones. It can be a wonderful, happy time of giving. Yet, it is so easy to get "wrapped up" in activities that we can forget the special spiritual needs of the holiday.
Keeping a prayerful mental watch is of vital importance during this time. Holding thought to the true essence of Christmas—to the powerful spiritual truths Jesus' life and teachings brought to light—brings genuine peace, joy, and healing to the season.
Keeping a watch is an important element in the Christmas story found in Luke's Gospel. We read, "And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night" (2:8). Keeping watch. It was their tender, faithful care and responsible watchfulness that enabled the shepherds to have the sweet privilege of seeing the babe Jesus.
