Christmas—for all seasons

CHRISTMAS celebrates the wondrous appearing to human understanding of the Christ. It was and is the announcement of man's relation to God, the dawning realization of a holy intimacy, embracing us in health, joy, and reflected power. Christ Jesus demonstrated the truth of man's identity as the image and likeness, the expression, of divine Love, God. Our Master said, "To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth" (John 18:37).

We, too, must bear witness to God as the source of our real individuality. Though we seem to walk about in flesh and bones, we are, in truth, spiritual beings, reflecting divine Love, Truth, and Life. Every instance of goodness, kindness, and understanding in our lives hints at our spiritual selfhood as God's reflection. In proportion as we express these virtues from our Father, harmony, strength, and peace come into our experience.

To contemplate Christ Jesus' unfolding witness from birth to resurrection—that we are indeed the sons and daughters of God—is to rejoice in the timeless Christmas message of salvation to all mankind. We are impelled to live this message. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes, "I love to observe Christmas in quietude, humility, benevolence, charity, letting good will towards man, eloquent silence, prayer, and praise express my conception of Truth's appearing" (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 262).
