The Bible and Science and Health: textbooks for mankind

Many new or even longtime readers of the Sentinel who have seen the words Christian Science in our masthead may be only somewhat familiar with the Christian Science textbook, Mary Baker Eddy's Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. If a reader walked into one of America's mainline bookstores that sell Science and Health, he or she might find it offered in the medicine, philosophy, or spirituality sections, rather than only in the religion section.

Yet, is Science and Health just another self-help or alternative spiritual therapy book? It couldn't be, since, along with the Bible, Science and Health is pastor of a church, the Church of Christ, Scientist, or the Christian Science Church, as it's often called. There are some important things that set Science and Health apart from any other book. The truths of the Bible—especially as illustrated in the life of Christ Jesus—are basic to Science and Health, and give it relevance both for today and for centuries to come.

Early on in the Church's history, a number of Christian Scientists voted "to organize a church designed to commemorate the word and works of our Master, which should reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing" (Manual of The Mother Church by Mrs. Eddy, p. 17). People interested in learning more about the Bible, about the life of Christ Jesus, and about the practice of primitive Christianity, will find Science and Health to be a tremendous help.
