I became interested in Christian Science in 1913
I became interested in Christian Science in 1913. We lived in a small coal mining town in southern Illinois; a family friend would occasionally stop by the house and leave copies of the Sentinel. I read every one of them eagerly, and was particularly interested in the testimonies of others' healings. And I believed them.
Several years later while attending business college, I woke up one morning with a bad pain in my side. This was in the days when doctors made house calls, and one came early that morning and pronounced the problem appendicitis. He tried to get me admitted into the local hospital as quickly as possible, but there were no rooms available because of a disaster in the coal mines.
Upon hearing this I called my mother, who asked if I would like to try Christian Science. I said I would. She called the friend who had been leaving the literature at our house. The woman was by then a Christian Science practitioner, and she began to pray for me immediately.
