Spiritual reconstruction after the earthquake

We were awakened at 4:31 a.m. by the violent shakings of an earthquake that registered 6.8 on the Richter scale. Struggling as if we were walking down the aisle of a rumbling train that was out of control, my wife and I rushed to lift our baby from his crib. Then we stood under a doorway praying.

How does one pray at a moment like this? Our past healing experiences in Christian Science had taught us to turn immediately to the spiritual stillness and power of God's ever-presence. We affirmed that man and the universe could never be separated from the security of Spirit. We knew that divine Love is not the cause of human disaster, for God is mankind's ever-present help.

The Bible states, "The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him" (Nah. 1:7). Also, "When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against him" (Isa. 59:19).
