Beside my computer is a list of some seventy-four instances in which I prayed to God and found healings of specific problems. Why seventy-four? No particular reason; they happen to be some of the times when I recall a definite good result from prayer. Because of Christian Science, I can tell of broken bones and wounds healed; of a happy marriage; of rescue at sea; of guidance and protection during military service in the Korean War; of relationship problems resolved; of complex engineering problems rectified; and of wounds to animals healed overnight.
I made that list when I was praying about another problem, feeling a great need to express gratitude to God for all He has done for me in the past, and at the same time desperately needing to establish in thought the reality of a loving God. On such occasions it is natural to recall gratefully past experiences of God's healing truth.
It is a great joy for me to remember hearing Mary Baker Eddy's riveting words from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures for the first time: "All that really exists is the divine Mind and its idea, and in this Mind the entire being is found harmonious and eternal" (p. 151). Jesus said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" (John 8:32). Being mechanically minded, I put Jesus' and Mrs. Eddy's statements together, and glimpsed what the Psalmist meant in declaring "Thy law is the truth" (119:142). I reasoned that all I needed to do to make me free was to know what God's law was. I began to turn to that divine law as a basic "tool" in my life.
