The Bible's verdict of love: not guilty!
"I never thought of the Bible as a book about love," said the homeless woman. "I was always afraid the Bible would make me feel guilty—like I was a bad person. So I never wanted to read it!"
This woman was talking, a year or so ago, to a friend of mine who volunteers at a homeless shelter here in Boston. Little by little my friend has helped this woman see that the Bible isn't a book about guilt. It's a book about the comfort of God's goodness and love and healing law. It's a book about regeneration, forgiveness, and starting a wonderful new life for yourself—with God.
Today, the woman in the homeless shelter isn't afraid to read the Bible anymore. She says reading it makes her realize that she likes herself—and everyone else—better. And it makes her realize that God likes her too. In fact, that God loves her.
