Each summer when I was young I visited my grandparents back in our hometown. During these visits my aunt, who was the only Christian Scientist in the family, would take me to church. During these years I attended Sunday Schools of many other denominations also, but none of these ever satisfied my wish to understand God. Later I started attending a Christian Science Sunday School on a regular basis, and the truths that I learned there helped me to understand God better and to know myself as a child of God.

In my freshman year of college, my father lost his job, and it looked like I would have to drop out of school. My prayers involved knowing that God supplies all good to each one of His ideas; that divine Love is omnipotent, omnipresent, and practical; and that it would guide me rightly. Within a few days I saw a notice on the bulletin board which stated that there were two openings in the United States Navy's reserve officers scholarship program. I applied for and received one of these scholarships, which paid not only for my complete college education but also for my room rent. Shortly, I was offered a job that covered all my eating expenses. This experience provided additional blessings—my father found another job, and he and my mother started studying Christian Science.

One summer I decided to install an above-ground swimming pool. Our family was looking forward to many happy times in this pool, but in the process of installation I suffered a wound to my hand and developed blood poisoning. The condition quickly grew worse. At the same time, I was impatient and overzealous in trying to bring about a quick healing. Although I was praying and studying Christian Science sincerely, I kept looking for physical improvement. Seeing no improvement, I became very fearful and desperate. Because my physical appearance was deteriorating, my wife told me I should call either a Christian Science practitioner or a doctor.
