One day, a while ago, I was feeling very sad
One day, a while ago, I was feeling very sad. My cat had been killed by a car that hit it. I knew that God never dies, so none of His spiritual ideas can die. But I missed my cat so much and wanted to pet him.
At first I tried to get away from the sadness by going out to a friend's house, but my head hurt a lot. When I went home I found my books, the Christian Science Hymnal, Science and Health, the Bible, and Miscellaneous Writings by Mary Baker Eddy. I opened each book separately. I don't remember all of what I found, but I remember I read: "Beloved children, the world has need of you,—and more as children than as men and women: it needs your innocence, unselfishness, faithful affection, uncontaminated lives. You need also to watch, and pray that you preserve these virtues unstained, and lose them not through contact with the world" (Miscellaneous Writings).
What especially stood out to me was the part about "uncontaminated lives" because I knew my spiritual being could not be "contaminated" by death, sadness, and grief. I felt God's love for me and for my cat, and the sadness went away. I realized that the headache was gone too.
