"Words that have caught God's breath"
The first tenet of Christian Science, given by Mrs. Eddy, states: "As adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life." Many people spend time reading about the Bible, but nothing can really substitute for the regular reading and study of the Scriptures themselves. It takes intimacy with the Scriptures to be truly sensitive to their spiritual import and to feel their healing power. The Bible has the power to define the nature of human experience itself. In Mrs. Eddy's Message to The Mother Church for 1902, she wrote, "Our thoughts of the Bible utter our lives."
Recently, the Reverend Dr. R. Maurice Boyd, formerly Senior Minister of the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York, delivered the keynote speech at the Layman's National Bible Association in New York City. He was the recipient of the LNBA Lifetime Achievement Award, a citation that's been presented only four times before in the association's history.
In phrases that sang with the rhythms of his Irish brogue, Dr. Boyd spoke of his abiding love for the Bible. His words were so moving that the audience gave him a lengthy standing ovation.
