When we're faced with symptoms of illness

The woman in front of me at the grocery store sneezed two or three times, then turned to her friend and apologized. "I'm sorry," she said, "but it's that time of year." She attributed her physical symptoms to the rather chilly day we were having, the first one in many months.

It seemed ironic that prior to hearing that comment I'd been thinking about some of the good things in store for everyone as autumn approached. Most notably in New England, of course, the changing color of the leaves. It hadn't crossed my mind to associate the approaching season with a risk of getting sick. I simply hadn't been educated to think that way.

Mankind does commonly believe, however, that illness is caused by certain material conditions, whether it's a drop in temperature or perhaps something that's "going around." Yet, through Christian Science we see that contagious and infectious diseases are fundamentally the outcome of what one entertains mentally.
