"A grain of Christian Science does wonders ..."

It's how faithfully we're putting into practice what we do know of Truth that makes the difference.

A Friend of mine was a brand new student of Christian Science when she received a telephone call from a military hospital. It was during World War II, and her brother was serving in the Merchant Marine. The call said only that her brother had sustained a crushing fall from the highest point of his ship. They wouldn't answer any questions, but asked that she come to the hospital immediately.

She had finished reading only half of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. But as she felt panic rise inside, she found herself thinking, "Now, what does that book say I should do?" The answer that came from her simple understanding of what she had read so far was: "What you don't take in (into consciousness), you don't have to get out!"

As she and her husband drove the hour's distance to the hospital, she clung resolutely to that thought. Every single time fear or concern tried to enter her thinking, she refused to admit it. Instead, she kept her thoughts filled with statements she had read in Science and Health, with memories of good times with her brother, and with other peaceful things. She was absolutely determined to be obedient to the thought that had come to her about refusing admission to fear. She knew from what she had learned about Christian Science that refusing to let in fear was not an exercise of human will, but a prayerful acceptance of the allness of God's goodness.
