"In the summer of 1958 there was another Middle East crisis. In July a revolution had taken place in Iraq. Lebanon and Jordan felt threatened. At the invitation of those countries' rulers, U.S. Marines and British troops landed. The Soviet Union was moving armor south to reinforce Syria.

"There was nowhere near today's massive buildup of troops, but, being at the height of the Cold War, we stood on the brink of a third world war.
