During a major earthquake in the Los Angeles area in October of 1987, the prayerful affirmation of the supremacy and control of God's government not only gave me protection but also enabled me to help others calm their fears.

I had wakened early that morning, about 3:30, feeling an urgent need to study the Bible Lesson (outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly). The subject was "Unreality." One particular citation from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy stood out to me: "Since God is All, there is no room for His unlikeness." Later, I pondered this statement all the way to work, cherishing it, drinking it in, and applying it to everything that came to thought.

I arrived at work about 6:30, an hour before starting time, as I was beginning a new assignment that day. About 7:30 a.m., as I walked down a hallway, there was a sudden jolt, as though the building had dropped a foot or so. A second later there was a violent shaking. The whole building seemed to tilt. The shaking stopped for a moment, and people started to move about and chatter excitedly. Then the shaking began again. A man, as he ran past, yelled at me to get under a desk. Instead I stepped into a doorway (which was as far as I could go) and braced myself against the doorjamb.
