INSIDE: LOOKING INTO THIS ISSUE

The purity of people's thought and action is closely related to the purity of the environment. Whether there is a need for renewal or a call for the protection and management of a particular area in the world, something more than human wants and opinions is necessary.

Christ Jesus once told a group of listeners to "love thy neighbour as thyself." That purity of motive—love your neighbor as yourself—is God-inspired, and people naturally respond to it.

Even though today the temptation to compromise purity seems widespread, God-inspired purity is an example, a model of thinking, for children and adults which, when consistently adopted and lived, can actually define the conditions of our environment.

Selflessness is necessary. We can cultivate enough selflessness to watch actively and to pray for ways in daily life to allow God's pure goodness to shine through us.

In this week's Sentinel, an article, "Cleansing the earth," and an editorial, "Why should Christians care for the environment?" address ways to pray about the kinds of environmental challenges our world is facing in the 1990s.
