Being on your own is an exciting goal for many people. For my teenage daughter "on your own" translates into louder music and more uninterrupted phone time!
For me, several years ago, it meant starting a consulting business, though with little more than some encouraging words from friends and family and some high hopes of my own. A few business opportunities eventually came along, together with some financial assistance, but the long-term outlook was pretty bleak as our family's savings continued to diminish. All along my wife and I were praying for some kind of help, but we weren't seeing any change.
The turnaround came one afternoon while I was listening to Monitor Radio, the radio news service of The Christian Science Monitor. I had been feeling especially low over the possible foreclosure on our home as well as the decline of my business, when a news segment came on about the people of Lebanon. They were asked to share their feelings about living through years of strife and civil war.
