"The book was different from anything I'd read before"

To say that reality is totally spiritual may seem too radical—until it heals you.

Before my encounter with Christian Science, my attitude toward religion might be described as hovering between uncertainty and agnosticism.

I had only a vague concept of God, and I failed to see how I could worship a deity who metes out punishment and blessings for reasons too mysterious for explanation. Orthodox doctrines seemed to provide little help to me in making the unknowable knowable; nor did I feel that blind faith was a sufficient alternative. For me, the ritualism that is so much a part of orthodox religion substituted mystery for meaning.

As for the Bible, I could find little in it that was practical. I regarded the Bible as a nice book to have around and appreciated its beautiful prose and poetry, but it was impractical and obsolete as far as I was concerned.
