A friend had been giving me some religious pamphlets that I found interesting. I felt the author must have written some larger work that would tell me more, so I decided to look in a bookstore. After trying just about every bookstore in New York City, I remember going home very discouraged. Suddenly the thought came to try the library around the corner.
The librarian couldn't find anything, so I thanked her and said I would borrow a couple of books anyway. I walked over two aisles, and the first book I picked up was Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. I said to myself, "This is exactly what I'm looking for—a key to the Scriptures." Later I was happy to have found Christian Science in this way; I read the textbook a number of times, gaining more and more understanding each time. I hadn't heard of Christian Science before reading this book.
One day I was passing 112th Street. I had never been through this block, though I was born in New York. I walked down the street, and there was a Christian Science church. I was overwhelmed. I had been learning so much from Science and Health, and I exclaimed to myself, "They have a church, too!" (I was raised in another Christian denomination, but hadn't been to church in years.)
