"All my life I had been a seeker ..."

Finding Light

Who couldn't use more light, more clarity in a time of questioning? And if we are in the middle of our own search for light, it sometimes helps to hear the experiences of others who are finding "there ariseth light in the darkness," as the Psalmist describes it. This column records some experiences that may be useful to those who are looking for new answers. The accounts are anonymous in order to give authors the opportunity to talk freely about earlier lifestyles and attitudes that may have been considerably different from what they now value. Of necessity, the recounting of experiences is telescoped in its time frame, and these narratives do not attempt to tell a complete story. But they do show something of the wide range of seekers and the way in which the light of Christ, Truth, restores, redirects, and regenerates lives.

The morning I first stepped into a Christian Science church, I was somewhat apprehensive and worried about being pressured into church participation before I was ready. But that was over ten years ago, and my fears were unfounded. Since then I have continued my spiritual journey as a dedicated student of the Bible and Christian Science.

Why did I decide to go to a Christian Science church in the first place? During the 1970s I was a college student in undergraduate and law school. I'd never heard of Christian Science or Mary Baker Eddy, its Discoverer and Founder. And, during my college years I'd even condemned Christianity. I felt that those who called themselves Christians were often hypocrites. I'd been brought up a Protestant and had been active in church. I'd also enjoyed attending Sunday School for many years. But in my early twenties, what I saw as the ills, greed, and selfishness of society, in addition to what I perceived as a lack of spirituality in my church, left me feeling spiritually barren.
