Satisfying the longing heart
The deepest desires of the human heart can be fulfilled only by God, our loving Father-Mother.
Who has not felt a deep aspiration after something higher and more fulfilling than what everyday human life has to offer? Sometimes people neglect their spiritual longings.
Perhaps because of life's disappointments, people feel there is no hope for fulfillment. So, like the background noise that we mentally shut out when we try to listen to someone talking to us, our vital, soaring hopes are shut out as impossible dreams. But it is a big mistake to do that. Those yearnings can carry us to unexpected heights.
Mrs. Eddy knew the importance of nurturing our deep, spiritual yearnings. It was the longing to know God and find a spiritual basis for health and healing that led Mrs. Eddy to her discovery of Christian Science. Not surprisingly, she alludes often to the aspirations in her writings. In fact, she declares in Science and Health, "What we most need is the prayer of fervent desire for growth in grace, expressed in patience, meekness, love, and good deeds."
