One day about nine years ago, desirous of collecting specimens...

One day about nine years ago, desirous of collecting specimens of pond life, I equipped myself with the necessary gear and drove to a pond a few miles away. (I have done this kind of collecting as a hobby for forty years and have fished in area ponds and ditches during that time with no objection from either the landowner or the tenant farmers.)

There was barbed wire strung around the pond, and while making an effort to pass under the wire, I failed to notice the end of the wire sticking out a few inches from a post. In lowering my head, I jammed my forehead violently against this protruding wire, causing several gashes.

The pain brought tears to my eyes—and a sharp reminder of the options open to me. The first and most obvious was that I could accept the pain and the torn flesh and bleeding as an accomplished fact. The second was that, having an understanding of Christian Science, I could claim that accidents and any attendant disorder could not be the reality of God's kingdom of harmony and security.
