I was raised in a home where Christian Science was practiced...
I was raised in a home where Christian Science was practiced by both parents. One of the earliest instances of healing I recall occurred when I was about ten years old. We had just moved to a new state, and I was soon to start school. A few days before school began, I fell off my bicycle and the hand brake lodged deep in my leg. I managed to free myself and ran into the house to find my mother. After we both calmed ourselves, she called a Christian Science practitioner to pray for me. I remember that the injury appeared serious. And while I don't remember exactly how we prayed, I do recall the great sense of peace and trust that came through the practitioner's work. My mother cleaned and bandaged the wound. In just a few days I was participating in gym class in my new school, and the healing was soon complete.
Instruction in the Christian Science Sunday School and my home background supported me during a period in my teenage and college years when I was not exactly living up to the standards of Science. The moral lessons I had learned, however, were a foundation on which to lean when it seemed as if my life were getting out of control.
After college, as I began seriously to study the Bible and the writings of Mrs. Eddy, prayerful resolutions were found in a job search and in personal relationship problems. I began a busy career and was married to a classmate who (unknown to me when we first met) was also a Christian Scientist.
