INSIDE: LOOKING INTO THIS ISSUE

People under pressure, in stressful situations, sometimes complain, "I can't hear myself think!" What they usually mean is that the noise level or the sheer volume of information coming their way is making them feel they're not thinking clearly.

Writers in this Sentinel explore the need to gain higher ground, to maintain perspective, to remind ourselves in the midst of daily demands that spiritual resources are always there for us whenever we make room and turn to them.

Christ Jesus certainly wasn't talking about some kind of withdrawal from and denial of the world when he advocated to those who are praying, "Enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret." But the Master himself made time to pray for himself and for the world. He is sometimes reported to have prayed through the night.

As Jesus indicated, the result of such prayer is to know more of God and His universe. We are rewarded with the conviction of all being included in God's care and under His justice. With that kind of perspective we are in a much better position to help others. Then we're able to hear not just ourselves thinking but something much better—divine harmonies and the music of Spirit, or Soul.
