I am very grateful that my parents were students of Christian Science. I was taught to rely on God and to know that He would meet my every need. Christ Jesus said, "Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom" (Luke). This and other Bible verses I memorized during classes in a Christian Science Sunday School have always been helpful to me.

When I was required to have a physical examination before I could enter our state university, the doctor who examined me told me that I had a hearing loss. The exam was given on a Saturday, and he asked me to return on Monday to have a hearing specialist check my hearing.

That evening I prayed for myself and considered Bible verses, such as this one in Proverbs: "The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the Lord hath made even both of them." I also studied Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy and was especially grateful for these two citations: "Ears. Not organs of the so-called corporeal senses, but spiritual understanding" and "Sight, hearing, all the spiritual senses of man, are eternal. They cannot be lost. Their reality and immortality are in Spirit and understanding, not in matter,—hence their permanence."
