To take up arms—spiritually
The images of war can loom so large, they seem to roll over individual choices and needs like gigantic tanks over fortifications of sand.
What we think is best for us as individuals may not appear to amount to much in the face of action on a huge, international scale.
Yet one of the most important things we can do, for the sake of ourselves and everyone else, is to refuse to be swept along in feelings of helplessness. We can actively resist—"take up arms," as it were, against that which would say there isn't any intelligent and compassionate order or moral and spiritual purpose in the world.
