At one time I had acquired the habit of drinking five...
At one time I had acquired the habit of drinking five, six, and sometimes more cans of cola in one day. When it was pointed out that one of the ingredients of colas is caffeine, I felt a deep desire to be rid of this habit. One day I read an article from an issue of The Christian Science Journal which helped me see that God's law is unchanging and ever available. While I was reading, I realized that I simply did not want to "take" a drug, no matter how harmless it might seem to be. With that, I was healed; that habit has never returned.
One day, when reflecting on this healing, I was filled with gratitude for this proof of God's healing power as a continuous law of good to man. That night I woke with a feeling of nausea. I made my way to the bathroom, but I was stricken with fear when I was not able to breathe and my body began behaving in a very strange way. I felt that I was going to die. Not being able to breathe or control my body made it impossible for me to call for help from my husband, who was sleeping nearby. But then that same feeling of gratitude which I had felt earlier in the day flooded my consciousness and I knew that God and His law of harmony, that same law which had freed me from the cola habit was right with me and could free me again. The thought came so strongly "I will not fear." As the Bible states, "In God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me" (Psalms). I could feel a calm assurance of God's love for each of His spiritual ideas.
The uncontrolled action of my body quieted, and my breathing resumed. I was able to return to bed. There was still one area of physical discomfort, but these words from a hymn in the Christian Science Hymnal brought a sense of peace and well-being: "Everlasting arms of Love / Are beneath, around, above." I was able to go to sleep again, and in the morning I was completely free of any ill effects.
