Not alone!

Even if you're single, even if you have no family and few friends, you don't have to feel alone. God's presence meets the needs of the heart.

There was a time when I felt very much alone. Being an only child, I had grown up mostly with adults. I had only a few friends in school and Christian Science Sunday School. I just didn't seem to fit in anywhere.

Later in life, as a schoolteacher, I enjoyed helping students. Service in my branch church enabled me to work for something bigger than myself, and I had friends there. But when my mother and father passed on within a few years of each other, I had to face the loss of the only family I had. During the summer vacations, I would take long trips to fill the days. But there seemed to be a huge void in my life.

While I was talking this over with a spiritually-minded church friend, she pointed out that I must find my completeness within my consciousness of God, and then the outward situation would change. God would provide whatever was needed to find peace, family, completeness. During discussions with a friend, who is a Christian Scientist, I also realized that my thought had been turning inward, and not outward to the world around me. There were many others who were challenged as I was. How about encircling them in love? Letting them be my family—and being a family to them?
