A higher viewpoint

Spiritual insight gives us more than a new outlook. It heals.

When I became a serious student of Christian Science more than thirty years ago, I had just started to use reading glasses. In effect, I had become an involuntary statistic in the general prognosis that eyeglasses and eventual aging are inseparable. But a few weeks later I was reading perfectly without glasses, and even now I can see fine print in poor light without them.

This was a positive demonstration of the power of Christian Science to heal, for my vision naturally improved as my spiritual understanding increased. The enlightenment resulted from my daily, deep study of the Bible and of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and from the prayers of a Christian Science practitioner. Today I'm still finding it true that the deeper we dig in learning about God and man, the higher becomes our spiritual outlook.

In the healing of vision defects, one's ability to discern, to perceive the meaning of spiritual truths, is obviously of the utmost importance. Actually, in all prayer-based healings spiritual understanding is one of the basic ingredients, for it helps us to see ourselves and others the way God sees us—the way He has made man in His spiritual image: perfect, without the slightest disability or impairment of any kind. Or, as the Bible puts it, "God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good."
