I am a third-generation Christian Scientist and have, my whole life, depended on this wonderful Science. I am very happy to have been a member of The Mother Church and of various branch churches at different times for twenty-three years. I am also very grateful for having had Christian Science class instruction from a dedicated teacher.

In 1982, while living in Los Angeles, I was a service engineer of high-frequency welding equipment. While servicing an older machine at a customer's plant, I had taken the usual safety precaution of turning off the main circuit breaker. I was not aware that the heater had been wired to a separate breaker fifty feet away. The work that I was doing required that I reach back into the throat of the press, with each of my arms coming from a different direction around the main structural members. I then had to reach past a network of wires, hoses, and thin metal straps. While I was entangled in this machine, my elbow hit a junction box that covered the terminals to the heating elements. One of two screws that held the box in place was missing, and the box came in contact with the live terminals. This electrified the whole upper half of the press.

When the electricity began flowing through my body, I tried to break loose but I had a strong hold on the machine. So I tried to call out for help but was unable to utter a word. Then I tried to force myself free by bringing one knee up and pushing against the machine with my leg.
