When I was eleven years old I became very sick with a high fever. Fever blisters made it nearly impossible to speak, so I wrote down what I needed to say. When my parents, who are not Christian Scientists, gave me a choice of medical treatment or having Christian Science treatment through prayer, I pulled out my pad of paper and wrote down "Christian Science." Since my mother took me frequently to the Christian Science Sunday School, I was familiar with the teachings of Science.

My mother telephoned a Christian Science practitioner and asked her to pray for me. I showed immediate signs of improvement. Later in the evening I ate my first solid food in ten days. By morning I was completely well. All cold sores cleared up soon after. Overjoyed by my recovery, my parents offered to take me on a special trip. But I wanted just to go back to school.

This healing made a deep impression on me. Later, when I was eighteen and faced with new challenges, I turned again to Christian Science. For the next few years I studied the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, regularly. After some time and many healings, such as those of flu, scabies, a dislocated finger, and smoking, I joined The Mother Church and a branch Church of Christ, Scientist.
