When I was eleven years old I became very sick with a high fever. Fever blisters made it nearly impossible to speak, so I wrote down what I needed to say. When my parents, who are not Christian Scientists, gave me a choice of medical treatment or having Christian Science treatment through prayer, I pulled out my pad of paper and wrote down "Christian Science." Since my mother took me frequently to the Christian Science Sunday School, I was familiar with the teachings of Science.

My mother telephoned a Christian Science practitioner and asked her to pray for me. I showed immediate signs of improvement. Later in the evening I ate my first solid food in ten days. By morning I was completely well. All cold sores cleared up soon after. Overjoyed by my recovery, my parents offered to take me on a special trip. But I wanted just to go back to school.
