Twenty years ago I was assigned to serve in a sensitive military public-affairs position in Vietnam. My work included arranging daily briefings for the Saigon-based international media corps. Immediately upon my arrival we were faced with an outcry from the most experienced reporters in Saigon. In response to their complaints my immediate superior had arranged a formal meeting with the bureau chiefs and other key media representatives. I met most of them for the first time during an emotionally charged confrontation.

I was not a member of the Church of Christ, Scientist, at the time, but my wife was. Together we had approached a number of situations with a "not my will, but thine, be done" attitude. During the meeting I prayed, acknowledging harmony as the law of spiritual being and recognizing God's ever-presence. I felt that if my motive for service were good, and if my desire to do God's will were pure and selfless, I would be guided to help bring resolution to this difficult situation.

At the meeting I made a proposal that involved my being more directly available after the daily briefings. At this juncture I had no idea how this might be working into other responsibilities of the position, but I felt it was a right approach to take.
