True independence

On July 4, the United States of America will celebrate the 214th anniversary of its Declaration of Independence.

As the spirit of humanity gives louder voice and clearer tone to the meaning of freedom and democracy throughout the world, the word independence takes on greater significance and urgency for all who believe that liberty is a fundamental right of man under the governance of Almighty God.

When Thomas Jefferson, who drafted the Declaration in 1776, sounded the bugle call for greater freedom, he could hardly have imagined that his words would still be echoing around the world in 1990. He wrote, in part, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."
