Why spirituality protects us

How often do we hear about accidents, crime, and similar troublesome events? Perhaps you will say, "Too often!" And you might even agree that sometimes the emphasis on sensation in the media may not tell us all we need to know about the situation.

Just to use a fairly simple example to show that what we hear about most often is not the normal but the abnormal: many of us drive to work every day or occasionally make long-distance trips by car. Under way we may meet hundreds of vehicles going in different directions, and the overriding impression is that of harmonious cooperation, a willingness to share the highways. The collisions that occur are minimal in comparison with the noncollisions. But it is the collisions that make news even though they are greatly outnumbered by noncollisions! So if we rely solely on the news reports, we may conclude that things are not going very well.
