Gaining a deeper understanding of God
Life on the surface of things will take us only so far. As we learn to know God, our lives take on greater depth and meaning.
In a world of quick fixes, fast answers, and shallow thinking, it often seems that we are rarely encouraged to ponder or go deeper than our initial surface response to an issue. A recent movie got me thinking more deeply about this human tendency.
The Abyss is a story about people who are given the task of finding a sunken nuclear submarine. This requires living and working in a station thousands of feet underwater. For most of us, diving eight or ten feet into a pool is about as deep as we'll ever want to go! Those who know how to scuba dive are comfortable at greater depths, of course, as are underwater researchers whose work takes them thousands of feet down.
This led me to think about my concept and understanding of God. How deep do I go in my understanding of Him? What am I willing to risk to find out how deep I'll go? Am I willing to leap into the great unknown of spiritual discovery? Wouldn't I be safer just staying close to the surface?
