In the spring of 1987 our eleven-year-old adopted daughter was diagnosed as having a tumor in the tissue surrounding her brain. The condition was considered to be only partly accessible to surgery, and we were told that radiation treatment would be required after surgery. A CAT scan, an angiogram, and a magnetic resonance image (MRI) were taken.

My husband is a neurophysiologist researcher at a university. As a biologist, he has a strong basic faith in the healing ability of nature. He was also willing to trust Christian Science. I had recently joined The Mother Church. We therefore decided to put off the decision on having surgery. We agreed to have another MRI done at the end of three months to ascertain the condition of our daughter's head.

I called a Christian Science practitioner, and her prayer freed our daughter from the immediate symptoms of discomfort. During the summer months the practitioner prayed for her and helped me see her in her true being as God's perfect spiritual likeness. It was made clear to me that Christian Science is not a philosophy, not just another way of looking at life, but offers clear insight into the very reality of existence. I felt confident about the child, expectant of healing. She had a wonderful, healthy, and wholesome summer, full of swimming, riding, and sewing.
